02The work

What the job actually involves

  • Own the category P&L, including sales, margin and stock
  • Build the range architecture and decide what stays and goes
  • Set pricing and promotional strategy for the category
  • Manage vendors, terms and private-label development
  • Analyse category performance and competitor movement
  • Work with buying, planning, marketing and stores to execute the plan

03The route

How to get there

  1. Graduate; an MBA is common at this level.

  2. Build 4–6 years in buying, merchandising or planning.

  3. Take an advanced diploma in buying and merchandising, or in retail analytics.

  4. Own a sub-category first and prove you can grow margin, not just sales.

  5. Learn vendor negotiation from the terms side, not just the price side.

04Eligibility

What employers ask for

Graduate, MBA preferred. Typically 4–7 years in buying, merchandising or planning.

05Skills

What matters, and why

Category P&L ownership
Growing a category by discounting it is not growth.
Range architecture
Too much choice slows the customer and ties up capital.
Vendor negotiation
Terms, not headline cost, decide the margin you keep.
Pricing strategy
Price is the fastest lever in retail and the easiest to misuse.
Data analysis
Category decisions are permanent for a season once stock is bought.
